For a day trip, a weekend or a
lifetime, take some time to discover Clinton Illinois.
Located in the center of what the State Economic Development
Department deems "The Golden Square," Clinton is
"smack in the middle of it all." The proximity to the
exact geographical center of the state of Illinois makes it a
destination that's literally easy to reach, but figuratively
difficult to leave. Once you begin to experience the pleasures of
our area, you may just wish to move here. If so, we can help in
that regard too, but for now, let's touch on things to do while
you're here.

Lincoln
Heritage Committee of DeWitt County
The Lincoln Heritage Committee of DeWitt County was formed by a
group of local volunteers dedicated to preserving, interpreting
and promoting Clinton and DeWitt County’s bonds with Abraham
Lincoln. Those ties run deep as Lincoln played an important role
in Clinton’s early development for nearly 20 years, beginning
with the formation of DeWitt County and the Eighth Judicial
Circuit in 1839 until 1859, the year the prairie lawyer was
elected President of the United States. The city of Clinton is an
official member of the Looking for Lincoln Coalition as well as
the Looking for Lincoln Story Trail and is home to nine Looking
for Lincoln wayside exhibits. An additional wayside exhibit is
located in DeWitt. In Clinton, visitors can stand on the very step
where Lincoln once stood, learn if their ancestors crossed paths
with the man who would one day become the sixteenth President,
tour the home of one of Lincoln’s many local colleagues, see the
house where Lincoln was often a guest, view the bronze statue
commemorating the site on Mr. Lincoln’s Square where Lincoln
declared, “You can fool all of the people part of the time…,”
enjoy a seven-block wayside exhibit walking tour, experience the
Illinois prairie landscape as it appeared in Lincoln’s
circuit-riding days, stroll among the weathered headstones of the
soldiers who fought in “Mr. Lincoln’s War,” and learn of
Lincoln’s unique experiences in DeWitt County through the
Lincoln Heritage Committee’s “Lincoln in DeWitt County”
exhibit. If you are planning a Lincoln-themed visit to Clinton and
would like more details, contact the Clinton Chamber of Commerce
at 217-935-3364 or 866-4-DEWITT or log onto www.lincolnheritageofdewittcounty.com
